Programme overview

The AI Leadership Apprenticeship Unit (AI strategy and opportunity) is designed to work alongside day-to-day responsibilities, making it suitable for organisations that need capability developed without disruption.

Training is delivered over 30 hours, typically across nine weeks, depending on organisational need and delivery model.

What your leaders will learn

This unit builds practical, applied capability in identifyingshaping and evaluating AI opportunities. It focuses on the strategic thinking leaders need before committing to tools, pilots or investment decisions.

Understand AI opportunities in business terms - Leaders will learn how to distinguish between AI opportunities, automation opportunities and wider process improvement opportunities, so they can avoid jumping to technology before the business problem is clear.

Define responsible AI direction - Leaders will explore how values, policy considerations, risk appetite and human oversight shape responsible AI use, creating a clearer leadership position on what AI should and should not be used for.

Identify where AI can create value - Leaders will learn how to spot opportunities linked to productivity, service quality, customer or colleague experience, insight, innovation and operational improvement.

Assess viability before investment - Leaders will apply structured thinking to test whether an AI opportunity is realistic, considering value, risk, data quality, process maturity, workforce impact, feasibility and readiness.

Translate AI ideas into evidence-led proposals - Leaders will develop clear opportunity statements and business case thinking, using evidence to explain the problem, proposed direction, expected benefits, risks and conditions for success.

Consider workforce impact from the start - Leaders will examine how AI may affect roles, confidence, morale, workload, trust and ways of working, including how to balance adoption benefits with honest discussion of workforce concerns.

Prioritise opportunities for action - Leaders will learn how to compare and prioritise AI opportunities, deciding what to progress, what to defer and what needs further evidence before it becomes a credible pilot or investment case.

Produce a practical AI Strategy and Opportunity Brief - By the end of the unit, leaders will have built a structured brief that brings together direction, evidence, value, risk, viability and prioritisation for a selected AI opportunity.

How is the training delivered?

Learning is delivered through flexible, workplace-based sessions led by industry-experienced practitioners from Apprentify.

Leaders apply what they learn directly to live business challenges, turning insight into practical action that aligns with organisational priorities.

How is the training assessed?

The assessment is designed to reflect real workplace application. Learners complete a structured skills-based assessment, supported by Apprentify and validated by the employer.

This ensures capability is demonstrated in a meaningful, business-focused context.

Why this training matters for employers

AI is already reshaping how organisations operate, but many organisations still lack a structured approach to identifying and prioritising AI opportunities.

Without strong leadership capability, AI initiatives can become fragmented, inconsistent and difficult to evaluate effectively.

This programme addresses that gap by strengthening decision-making, governance and strategic clarity around AI opportunities and investment decisions.

For employers, this leads to more consistent decision-making across teams, improved risk management and stronger alignment between AI investment and business outcomes. It helps organisations approach AI opportunities in a more structured, evidence-led and commercially informed way.
