Overview

Strategic leadership in the age of AI

The AI Leadership - Developing AI Strategy Level 5 Apprenticeship Unit is designed for senior professionals responsible for setting direction, governance and oversight for AI use within their organisation. As part of the government's priority skills programme, this unit addresses one of the most critical capability gaps facing UK businesses: leaders who can adopt AI with confidence, govern it responsibly and use it to drive real strategic change.

Apprenticeship units are built around the knowledge and skills set out in existing employer-led occupational standards, ensuring high-quality, relevant and targeted training. Each unit is intentionally concise, with training lasting between 30 and 140 hours delivered over one to sixteen weeks. This gives employers maximum flexibility to select a unit that addresses their specific skills gap and schedule delivery around business needs.

What this programme covers

  1. AI Strategy and Organisational Direction: Define, communicate and lead an organisation-wide AI strategy aligned to business goals, values and risk appetite — including prioritised use cases, benefits realisation and delivery milestones.
  2. AI Procurement and Investment: Make evidence-based investment and procurement decisions for AI tools, platforms and suppliers, applying fair evaluation criteria and managing long-term risks such as vendor lock-in and data governance.
  3. Governance, Ethics and Responsible AI: Sponsor and operate a governance framework that safeguards lawful, ethical and responsible AI use, embedding accountability and transparency into organisational decision-making.
  4. Enterprise Risk and Audit Readiness: Oversee AI risk management within the organisation's enterprise risk framework, ensuring audit readiness, effective incident response, and continuous monitoring of AI-related risks.
  5. Leading Organisational Change: Lead cross-functional delivery of AI-enabled change, assessing workforce impacts, engaging stakeholders, and supporting targeted upskilling and reskilling.
  6. External Engagement and Regulatory Readiness: Represent the organisation credibly with regulators, partners and sector bodies, and prepare for evolving AI regulation by embedding compliance readiness into business processes.
